China takes measures to boost service outsourcing

BEIJING -- The Chinese government has announced a raft of tax breaks and subsidies to encourage the growth of service outsourcing.

The measures to boost the development of service outsourcing were outlined in a document drafted by the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) and approved by the State Council, China's Cabinet.

It said 20 cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Suzhou and Hangzhou, had been identified as pilot service outsourcing regions, where companies are eligible for favorable polices.

Unions press to suspend outsourcing

The government’s largest union will press Congress this week to suspend government outsourcing studies until rules are narrowed for what work can be contracted out.

“We’re moving formally — through a bill in Congress — to finally get contracting-out to a level playing field,” said John Gage, president of the American Federation of Government Employees. The union plans to unveil a comprehensive proposal to overhaul public-private competitions this week as part of its annual three-day lobbying effort on Capitol Hill.

Warner Bros to outsource jobs to India

In a move that could ruffle a few feathers in the Barack Obama administration, American entertainment giant Warner Bros is planning to outsource jobs to India.

It is believed that about 200 positions are to be outsourced to India and Poland by Warner Bros, which also said it would slash about 10 per cent of its 8,000-strong workforce in the coming days.

Business process outsourcing firms grow despite incurring project delays

The Philippine business process outsourcing (BPO) sector managed to grow by nearly one-third last year despite having experienced project delays due to the global slowdown.

Revenues of the country’s BPO industry rose to $6 billion last year, 26 percent more than the $4.9 billion reported in 2007, said Oscar Sañez, chief executive officer of the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPA/P).

Philippine outsourcing to grow over 20% in 2009

The Philippines' business process outsourcing (BPO) industry will remain bullish this year despite the global economic crisis that has slowed down most of the country's major industries, industry leaders and experts said.

The steady demand for lower cost but reliable information and communication technology services will spur most companies in the United States, Europe and Australia to continue to outsource some of their functions to countries with cheaper but skilled labor force, like India and the Philippines.

Advance Auto announces outsourcing; positions to be eliminated

Advance Auto is putting the brakes on its trucking fleet. The company announced Monday that it will outsource its over-the-road trucking to UPS Freight and Schneider National.

The move will eliminate about 270 positions company-wide by this summer, 45 here in the Roanoke Valley.

Advance says it hopes most of the eliminated employees can move to UPS Freight and Schneider.

A spokeswoman says the companies have already been interviewing candidates.

Outsourcing in Philippines grew 26pct in 2008: industry

MANILA (AFP) — Call-centres and other outsourcing companies in the Philippines earned 6.06 billion dollars in 2008, a 26 percent increase over 2007, the industry association said Monday.

The number of people working in the industry also rose over the same period, by 24.8 percent to 371,965, despite the global financial crisis, said Oscar Sanez, head of the country's Business Processing Association.

He said that this showed the Philippines was on track with its plan to capture 10 percent of global market for outsourced services by 2010.
